Chance is still up and running

Following complaints from Springs residents about Chance Children's Home in Dunnottar closing its doors, management decided it's time to set the record straight.

They have been going through a difficult time when Trudy Howell, the founder and manager of Chance, died in January.

Juanita de Canha, centre manager, says with the death of Trudy, the children and the community were unsure of the future of Chance.

The Department of Social Development identified a suitable and experienced mentoring organisation for the continued care of the children.

She says the Germiston Association for the Aged, was chosen and has since acted as mentor for the non profitable organisation.

The objective of the mentor was to assist the home with policy and procedure change and improvement, to better the care of the children and in assisting the home to be come a model facility.

“The home is still running and is looking forward to a new face lift in their cooperate image.

The eight house home currently looks after 90 children, newborn to 18 years.

The mentoring team envisages the re-instating of a board of directors, who will be capable volunteers from the community to take Chance to a new level.

The vision of the future is to become an alternative home, where the main attribute is the quality of the integral education of abandoned and unprotected children.

This is so that they can be part of a normal adult life in the environment in which they will find themselves as adults.

Juanita says they want to offer a service and hope to the community by uplifting and developing the children.

It can be done by providing education to the children that they will sustain after leaving the security of the home.

She says this will put an end to the cycle of abuse.

“We strive to help young people to achieve their potential and to make a positive contribution to their future and to society.

“Also to empower vulnerable children with skills and knowledge.”

Management and staff at the home believe that childcare is not just the provision of food and shelter, but includes the provision of a special place for a child to be.

She says it should be a home where they can take pride and feel surrounded by love and warmth.

Juanita de Canha is the new centre manager at Chance Children’s Home.
