Load shedding may still happen

The load shedding schedule Ekurhuleni released last week is still valid.

Although Eskom assured residents that the problem with generating power had been resolved last week, Themba Gadebe, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Metro says load shedding will be enforced if Eskom requests the metro to do so.

The country-wide possibility of households experiencing load shedding came into effect after a coal storage site collapsed on November 2 hampering the generation of power at Eskom’s Majuba Power Station.

This caused less power generated from Majuba, putting the power grid under strain.

During the last part of last week Eskom said that despite their vulnerable power system no blackouts were expected for this week.

For those who had been studying the load shedding schedule would have seen that the Springs Central Business District was not on the list.

Gadebe says this omission is because the metro is attempting to keep the electricity on, as far as possible, in industrial and commercial areas to keep the economy going.

On the question why Struisbult was not on the schedule, Gadebe provided no answer.

He says the residents of Struisbult experiencing power outages for long periods on November 2 had nothing to do with the Eskom power generating problem.

Gadebe says it was due to a cable fault on the supply cable.
