St Mary’s Wing is doing well

With the opening of St Mary’s Wing at Parkland Clinic still fresh in everyone’s mind, they have quickly outgrown their baby shoes.

According to Marika van der Linde, marketing manager of the hospital, they have had 298 deliveries since July.

The wing is beautifully decorated and has a water birth room with bath.

She says they decided to have a separate private family room where both parents of the baby can stay while baby is in hospital.

The maternity wing has a new Birth Basics programme which is unique and one of a kind.

She says this project was initiated by the maternity wing and has not yet been implemented in any other hospital in the country.

It is a midwife-driven project for low-risk pregnancies which offers affordable deliveries for mothers who cannot afford a private hospital.

These rates are affordable within the comfort and convenience of a private hospital visit and they can call for a midwife to help them.

Marika says this will be done with the assistance and monitoring of midwives throughout the pregnancy and a gynaecologist if necessary and the assistance of a paediatrician.

They currently assist 81 patients in the programme.

Annemarie Cronje, receptionist at the wing, says the new offices are beautiful and they have nestled nicely.

“With this new wing directly next to the hospital, all the staff is part of a big family,” says Marika.

The gynaecologists, paediatricians and staff enjoy working in the spacious wards and theatres.
