There is hope for the stripped War Memorial

The damaged copper strips will be removed and the dome painted with a copper-coloured paint.

The restoration on the war memorial at the top of Third Street, in the central business district will start soon.

Lebogang Ramashala, senior media officer at Ekurhuleni Metro says the metro is currently busy with phase one of the restoration process which entails repairing the damaged structure of the war memorial.

The damaged copper dome will be removed, re-plastered and painted with a copper coloured paint to prevent any future theft of the memorial’s copper panels.

She says all these repairs on the structure will be completed by the end of November this year.

After this the metro will start replacing the stolen name plaques.

Ramashala says materials of no value to thieves will be used to replace the name plaques.

She could not say how long the last phase of the memorial’s restoration will take.
