Duck pond is a work in progress

Phase one of the renovations at the George Sutter Park duck pond are underway.

The island has been enlarged and rocks are being stacked on the sides around the island.

Gert Parsons, convener of the Selpark Dam Project working group, says the rocks will be pressed to prevent the soil and rocks from collapsing when it rains.

It is believed that the drill will arrive today and then the drilling of another borehole will begin.

When this is done the group feels it necessary to build a brick pump house.

The next step after the hole is drilled is to connect electricity to the pump.

Parsons says a fence is going to be erected thereafter with the assistance of the metro.

Members of the Selpark CPF was given the opportunity to do a
survey of the trees that will be planted in the park.

Due to the recent rainfall, workers had to pump out almost 60 000 litres of water from the pond on Monday (October 27).

This is after the metro opened up the storm water drains
that were blocked off previously.

When the metro opened up the drains, the filters preventing paper and other waste materials to flow into the pond, weren’t there anymore but will definitely be replaced.

The amount of water flowing into the pond when it rains, gives a good indication of how much extra water can contribute to the pond.
