Family frightened by a snake

The Morake family in Welgedacht is still frightened after they found a snake inside their house.

The uninvited visitor was seen by the owner of the house inside a room on Thursday at around 11am.

Ouma Morake said she was trying to kill the snake when she poured boiling on it but the snake was too stubborn to die.

Because she did not know what to do, Morake ended her fight with the snake until the next morning.

The neighbors came to the family’s rescue on Friday morning when they all attacked the snake that they believe to be a cobra until they killed it.

“The fight was not easy as the snake was also fighting back at us with its neck growing bigger and bigger,” said one of the neighbors France Monku.

He explained that residents in that area always live in fear of snakes.

“We live with snakes around the 9th Avenue part of the suburb because of the long grass growing between our houses.

He says no one bothers to cut the grass adding that they fear for their children’s lives as they can easily be attacked by the poisonous snakes roaming around their streets.

“Children are the easy targets for the snakes because they can not defend themselves,” said a frustrated Monku.

He said it was not the first snake that they killed as three days ago they killed another one.

One of the neighbors, Busisiwe Mphali revealed that a small dam not far from their homes is a home for “a black, long and huge as a car tire snake”.

She said the snake at times is seen coming out from the dam to an open veld.

She said the community believes that the snake comes out of the dam in search for food.

“The metro or anyone must help us chase away snakes from our area,” Mphali appealed.
