Family supports Maureen during cancer period
Maureen Roodnick (82) was diagnosed with breast cancer 29 years ago, but she still remembers the support she received from her familyfamily.
She clearly remembers October 1985, when she was told the lump in her breast was malignant.
This Pollak Park resident made the choice to believe in God to heal her, instead of going for chemotherapy.
It wasn’t a difficult decision to make as she knew her family would be there for her every step of the way.
Although it was a shock to everyone, including Maureen, they never made her feel as if she wasgoing through this alone.
A biopsy was done exactly one month after she felt the lump.
According to Maureen the doctors didn’t only remove the lump in those days, they removed the breast completely.
But not once did her children or family leave her side.
It did not always go well, as she had her well days, but also some bad days, but if her family and children couldn’t be with her in person, they phoned or prayed for her.
Her son Neville Roodnick visited her shortly after she had her mastectomy and said he received a message that he had to lay his hands on her and pray.
He did exactly that, and Maureen says she could feel a warm glow going through her body.
Through Neville and her family’s prayers she knew that the cancer had left her body completely.
Although most of her friends sympathised with her situation, none of them were really there for her.
She says family is important during a time like this, because this disease brings all together.
She says the nursing staff try to prepare you mentally for the chemotherapy, but it cannot be compared to her faith and trust in a higher hand who she believed would heal her.
“And indeed he did,” says Maureen.
Her faith and family’s support carried her through the bad times and today she is completely healed of cancer.
She will always be grateful for her family’s support, but it cannot be compared to God’s healing powers.
