Water pipeline progressing well

One part of the trench for the new water pipeline between Bakerton and Persida has been filled up.

Excavation started in July with a trench where the old water pipeline will be replaced with a high density polyethic pipe.

Phase one of this project has started closing up the starting point of the trench at Bakerton, leaving the welding sections open.

According to one of the contractors Ron Bryan, about 500m of the pipes were tested with 16 bars pressure and no leaks were found.

Although they experienced a backlog due to the fact that the supplier did not deliver pipes, they are back on track again.

He says the tests are done to see if the welding is strong enough to handle the pressure of the water.

The 315mm pipe is placed in a trench with a diameter of 500m x 300m.

Johannes Mdakane, the community liaison officer on duty, says the job will be completed in January 2016.

Phase two will include a new reservoir in Persida, built next to the current one.

It will contain 35 megalitres of water.

It is not yet known when phase two will start.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to press.
