Manfred Mann was born on October 21, 1940 in Johannesburg.

The South African born musician is a keyboard player for the group Manfred Mann of the 1960s, which is a British beat, rhythm and blues and pop band that has a strong jazz foundation.

The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers, as the band was originally called, was formed in London in December 1962 by keyboard player Mann, drummer and vibes player Mike Hugg, Mike Vickers on lead guitar, Dave Richmond on bass and Paul Jones as lead vocalist and harmonica player.

The band Manfred Mann were chart regulars in the 1960s and one of the first south-of-England-based groups to top the US Billboard Hot 100 during the ‘British invasion’ onto the US music scene.

Mann later led the 1970s group Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
