Card fraud on the increase

Card fraud is on the increase in Springs, Kwatsaduza and Daveyton.

The Springs police received five complaints on card fraud on Sunday only.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says it is believed the fraudsters target their victims the most on Sundays.

Areas where the fraud took place recently is Kwatsaduza and Springsgate Shopping Centre.

Ramphora’s advice is not to allow anybody close to you when drawing money at an ATM.

He says, there are people who hang around at ATMs waiting for someone to fall pray to their scam.

Having your ATM card stolen can cost you a lot of money.

To protect yourself from falling victim, follow these simple tips:

  • Your bank will not ask your personal details via SMS or email and will never ask you to confirm or update your account details by email.
  • Your password, ATM PIN or online username or pin should not be given to anyone and never write it down or share it.
  • Do not save your Internet banking password on your desktop.
  • After entering internet banking password, do not leave your computer unattended Always log off or sign off at the end of a session.
  • Avoid doing internet banking in public areas such as Internet cafés, or on any computer that can be accessed by people you do not know.
  • Change your PIN and passwords frequently.
  • Put sensible transaction limits on your accounts.
  • Only provide your credit card details to reputable companies.
  • If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Ramphora says never send money or give any banking details to anyone you do not know and don’t trust.

Any suspicious looking person should be reported to the nearest police station.
