UPDATE: ATM bombed in New State Areas shop

The ATM bombing in New State Areas came as a shock to most of the residents.

Resident Doreen Visser lives close to the shop where the expolosion took place on Wednesday evening.

She says the explosion was loud and everything in her house was shaking.

According to Captain Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, the shop owner was helping a client when he noticed the men, wearing balaclavas, entering the shop.

The robbers armed with firearms, allegedly walked directly towards the ATM inside the shop.

The Visser family were watching TV at 7.30pm, when they heard the loud bang.

Doreen immediately ran outside and was just in time to see the armed robbers jumping into a blue BMW and driving away.

She says the upper body of one  of the robbers was visible through the sunroof of the car and he sat in the car, still with the rifle in his hand.

The weapons used during this robbery are believed to be AK 47s.

Her son Jaco Visser ran to the shop to find the two owners and one customer who was inside the shop shaken but not hurt.

Jaco took several photos of the scene, while his mother was trying to get hold of the Springs police.

He says the ceiling and shelves stocked with groceries collapsed and and the ATm was in pieces.

Doreen’s husband Johan says armed response was first on the scene and the police arrived later.

Visser says no shots were fired during the bombing but crime is getting out of hand and no one is safe anymore.

According to the Visser family the owners of the shop are two friendly and generous men.

“They are good people and do not deserve this,” she adds.

Springs police requests the community to come forward with information that might lead to the arrest of these robbers.
