Cleaning of the duck pond started

Today marks the first day of the cleaning of the George Sutter Park duck pond.

Phase one has officially been launched and workers and machinery was seen since 8am.

A working group has been formed and various tasks were allocated to different people.

The project will run under the name of Selpark Dam Project and the registration of a non-profitable organisation (NPO) is in progress.

Gert Parsons the convenor of the group says as soon as the NPO is registered they will open a bank account.

His task is to see that everything takes place according to plan.

He says the dam will only be there for domestic birds.

They will call in a landscape architect, engineer, environmentalist and the metro will appoint staff members to assist the group.

Anita Greeff, general manager of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will be in charge of the finances.

Parsons says no lists or forms will be send around to collect money.

According to Parsons various businesses and individuals have already indicated that they are interested in donating money.

A profession person was called in to determine where the borehole can be drilled.

Hennie van Heerden and Frikkie Berowsky is in charge in this.

Parsons says the metro has been informed of this for approval and says as soon as they receive it in writing it will be priority.

Goosey Fernandes is in charge of repair and cleaning of the pond.

It is his labourers and front end loader currently working at the pond.

Anton van Niewenhuizen and Johan van Heerden from Selpark CPF will take care of the fish, the fence and security of the park.

Ward councillor Shadow Shabangu says the metro will donate the mesh fence for the CPF members to install.

Parsons says when this project is completed, they will start to look at other dams in the area to upgrade them too.
