Sunday morning speeding stopped in tracks

One of the speedsters was late for a prayer meeting.

A man’s “flying” to a prayer meeting caused him to be arrested.

Senior Supertintendent Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department says a 29-year-old man, driving a Toyota sedan was caught doing 173km/h along the N12 westbound between the Holfontein turnoff and Pansy Bridge on Sunday morning.

Kgasago says the man pleaded for mercy as he was late for a prayer meeting.

His arrest and that of two other speedsters were made between 5:30am and 7am on Sunday morning on this 120km/h stretch of road.

The other speedsters include a 52-year-old old mini-bus driver, who said being late for a trip to the Kruger National Park prompted him to clock 162km/h and a 44-year-old old man in a BMW sedan, claiming that his child was sick.

He was caught doing 172km/h.

All three speedsters were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Springs police station and are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.

They were released on R1 000 bail each.
