Matric exams starts the end of the month

With less than a month to go for this year's matric examinations, the Gauteng Department of Education says it is ready.

Phumla Sekhonyane, Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesman says there will be 143 647 Grade 12 learners across the Gauteng province who will begin their year-end National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations on October 27.

Of this amount, there are a total of 101 265 full time candidates and 42 382 part time candidates, writing their exams in 928 centres across 15 districts in Gauteng.

“We have appointed 8090 markers and 4789 invigilators in 11 marking centres across the province,” says Sekhonyane.

As part of our final strategy to ensure the readiness of learners for these exams, the department has established matric revision camps across the province in areas such as Magaliesburg, Hammanskraal and Vanderbijlpark.

There will also be walk-in camps in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni areas that will accommodate 40 327 learners in 108 sites.

The pupils for the camps are already notified and started to work earlier this week.

These camps will cover key topics that have not been sufficiently covered during the year and drilling learners in possible exam questions.

As part of measures to support learners during this period, the department has a standing agreement with Child Line to assist learners in stressful situations as a result of pressure they might experience from these exams.

Learners can phone Child line on 08000 55 555 for counselling assistance.

Sekhonyane says the results of these exams will be released on January 6, 2015 at schools.
