No-one takes responsibility for paper litter

Paper littered all over the road in Cowles Street in Geduld irks residents as the shedding happens almost on a daily basis.

This is the sight that Dr Tim Wickens, chairman of the Rowhill CPF, is getting fed-up with.

“The paper falls off the trucks which are only covered with nets that have large holes,” says Wickens.

Paper is strewn off the moving trucks and lands in the road and on the pavements, leaving a trail of litter that makes a dreary sight for residents.

Wickens contacted Sappi regarding the matter and was allegedly told they would send a team to clean the mess up.

“Unfortunately, the clean-up doesn’t appear to have been too effective,” Wickens says he told a site manager at Sappi.

After many enquiries made by Wickens, he received a response from Elijah Masondo, spokesperson for Sappi.

Masondo says, “The white paper being transported along Cowles Street is for Kimberly Clark which is located next to our paper mill. We have brought this to the attention of their general manager who has responded promptly and is addressing the matter.”

Masondo added that they do inspection of the roads leading up to the mill on a daily basis.

Tony Hulme, Enstra Mill Manager, Kimberly-Clark, responded to enquiries sent by the Addie.

“Our manufacturing facility located in Springs adheres to the strict standards required to comply with the environmental standard to manufacture and supply tissue-based products and personal hygiene products,” says Hulme.

“Kimberly-Clark does not transport any of the recycled paper.”

Hulme also says that their records indicate that no complaints were received by Kimberly-Clark telephonically, electronically or via written means regarding this matter.

They have received a notification from their neighbouring business (Sappi) on September 16 of a complaint from a resident and had put in place corrective measures with service providers to avoid the occurrence in future.

Hulme continues saying that Kimberly-Clark require for all their waste paper service providers to adhere to their minimum standards of transporting products.

“We have received affirmation from each of them that they will adhere to this standard moving forward and we will only accept deliveries from vehicles where the loads have indeed been transported as per our minimum standards,” he says.
