Springs scoops top five awards at SANBS awards

Vic Verster was honoured at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) annual donor awards event held in Benoni on Friday (August 15).

Springs blood donors scooped the top five milestone.

It was an honourable moment for Vic Verster when he received a standing ovation while approaching the stage to receive his 250 unit special award.

This was an emotional time for him and he says donating blood is part of his life.

He received a William Harvey medal as well as a Parker pen and pencil set.

“I donate blood every second month and before the due date I start to feel strange,” he says.

But after donating blood he feels fine again.

He adds Sister Juliana Visser, clinic supervisor at the Springs Blood Donor Centre, was just as excited with his award.

Other Springsites who received awards are Colin Boucher, Dirk Mans, Stuart Bate and Joe Oberholster, who each received a 200th unit award.

Visser says she received the award on behalf of Louis Jordaan who was also recognised for his 200th unit as he could not attend the function.

Dawie Jordan received an award for his 125th units donation and his son Quintes Jordan a 100th units award.

Visser says these awards takes years of regular donation and for this the SANBS is grateful.

She says the event was held to acknowledge some of the milestone donors who have reached their 50th, 100th and more donations.

“Truly a remarkable achievement for Springs donors walking away with most of the medals,” she adds.
