Pregnancy ends in coffee tin

A foetus was found in Third Street dumped in a 5L coffee tin.

At 10.30am, today the Addie received a phone call about the discovery of a foetus between Fifth and Sixth avenues, in Third Street in the Springs central business district.

The foetus is very small, most probably of an early pregnancy stage.

Albert Gwara, a car guard, says he saw the closed tin on August 20, but at first thought it was just a tin dumped as refuse.

He opened it after a while when his curiosity took over.

It was then that he discovered the foetus in the tin.

He did not pay any attention to it and closed the tin.

On Thursday morning when he arrived he noticed the tin was still there and he opened it again.

Upon further investigation he noticed the foetus inside it and called passers by to have a look.

It was in a form of a watery mass.

When all the bystanders agreed with Gwara that it was a foetus, Gwara called an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officer parked across the street from the scene.

The EMPD officer immediately contacted the police who are investigating the matter.

Arriving on the scene, a police officer confirmed to the Addie that the no name brand coffee tin did contain a foetus.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman of Springs SAPS, was not available for comment.

The Addie journalist was not allowed to go closer to the tin to take a proper photograph.
