EMPD recovered a hijacked vehicle in Benoni

The EMPD Intervention Unit assists vehicle tracker in recovering a VW Polo, hijacked in Springs during a business robbery.

The unit members received information on the hijacking at about 6.30am yesterday (July 29) stating the vehicle was in the Benoni area.

Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, says the swift reaction of the metro police resulted in the vehicle being recovered at 7am, at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Tom Jones Street, Benoni.
When the vehicle was recoverd, it emerged the suspects had robbed a business woman of R2 000 cash in Springs and also hijacked her vehicle.
The perpetrators allegedly felt the police were hot on their heels and decided to abandon the vehicle in Benoni.
Apparently in their haste to evade arrest, the suspects left behind a 9mm Norinco pistol with its serial numbers filed off.
He says the firearm was found on the floor of the vehicle and it was loaded with 12 rounds.
The recovered vehicle was taken to SAPS pound in Van Ryn Deep whilst the firearm was taken in by Springs police for ballistic tests and fingerprinting.
