N17 staff members help at Springs SPCA

The staff members had fun spending their 67 minutes

The N17 Hospital chose the Springs SPCA as their charity for Mandela Day, because they feel the organisation needs it the most.

When Leana Haywood, spokesperson for the N17 Hospital, contacted the Springs SPCA, she did not realise how much fun it would be in helping the animals.
She asked Debbie Miller, fundraiser for the Springs SPCA, what else they can bring to assist them with in terms of food.
Debbie says cat food would be the better option, as everyone always thinks of the dogs and the poor cats are left without food.
“Sometimes we receive a large donation of food, containing mostly dog food with perhaps one tin of cat food,” she says.
She took the hospital staff to a courtyard where the blankets and soft beds of the animals are piled up to be washed.
She explained to them what they had to do with the blankets to get rid of most of the animals’ hair, before it can be packed away.
The hospital staff eagerly started shaking the blankets and folding them up.
Peter Thavhima one of the N17 staff members, removed washing from the machine to hang it.
Two other staff members Desmond Vilakazi and Gugu Sibiya chose to wash the dog bowls in warm soapy water.
After Peter packed all the dry and clean blankets away, the staff went into the charity store to see what else they can do to assist with.
Leana says it was a morning worth spending.
