Family of man found dead on dump needs closure

The family needs to know what happened

The family of Jan-Hendrik Potgieter (76) who was allegedly murdered on June 19, wants closure.

One of his daughters Lorraine Fourie says, they have buried her father, but they need to know what happened.

She says her father visited her on June 16, and mentioned a man was  living with him.

He knew the man as they at one stage worked together.

Potgieter’s body was found on June 19, buried in a shallow grave in an open field between the N17 and Daggafontein.

Fourie says her dad was known as a man who cared about others in need.

It did not shock her that he was helping this man, who apparently was going through a divorce and was unemployed.

Her father was in the process of selling his house in Daggafontein as he was going to stay with her in Lydenburg.

Fourie says her father kept all his personal documents in a folder in his bakkie, which the alleged murderer apparently still has.

The family was shocked to hear their father’s bakkie was only reported stolen two weeks after he died.

When the family visited his Daggafontein house, they found his glasses under the bed-side table, as well as a broken cup under his bed and his steel bed broken.

“We would like to know what happened and why this man killed our father,” she adds.

The police is still looking for Wilhelm Johannes Frederick Smith for questioning.

It is believed he is still in Gauteng and still has Potgieter’s bakkie in his possession.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police, says they are doing everything in their power to find Smith.

Smith and his 17-year-old son were allegedly with Potgieter on June 18 when Smith allegedly killed Potgieter with a spade, after an argument took place.

Ramphora confirmed Potgieter died of multiple head injuries.

After allegedly killing Potgieter, the man and his teenage son loaded the body into Potgieter’s bakkie to the place where they buried him.

The man took his son to his estranged wife and left with the Potgieter’s bakkie without saying where he was going.

The mother took the 17-year-old boy to the Springs Police Station on June 19, to report the incident.

Ramphora says the police need the help of the community to find Smith to assist them in investigating the murder.
