They are excited to serve the community

Springs Park Rotary Club invites every one to serve with them

Hoppy and Pat Kemp are excited to continue their service to the community.

Hoppy, on June 26, was inducted as president of Springs Park Rotary Club and Pat president of this club’s Anns.

They explain Rotary is a world-wide organisation where people meet to serve the community.

Both invite everyone who wants to do something for the community to do it through their club.

Many people, according to Hoppy, do not have the time for a commitment of one evening a week or month, but serving others is as easy as becoming a friend of Rotary and doing a project with the Rotarians.

Every year they have a few big projects where they raise funds for the projects they choose.

One of these fund-raisers Springs Park is running, is the beer tent at this year’s Springs Advertiser’s Wings and Wheels fun day on August 1 at the Springs Airfield.

They also plan to raise funds with the club’s yearly Rythm on the River event in October, as well as the club’s golf day later in the year and regular raffles at the club meetings.

One of the club’s biggest projects this year is to raise funds to purchase much needed transport for children of Muriel Brand School.

He said the children in this school come from all over the East Rand and have to be transported with specialised transport that can accommodate wheelchairs.

Hoppy said this project will be done with some overseas Rotary clubs that will provide matching grants for the money the club raises.

Springs Park Rotary Club is also involved with the daycare centre at Rus ‘n Bietjie, where about 100 children of Gugulethu/Everest are cared for.

Their aim is to provide equipment to this school.

They give a monthly donation to the Geduld Feeding Scheme, where children and adults get regular meals and see to it that the Springs Old Age Home’s frail care has proper medical equipment.

The club also has an ongoing wheelchair project, through the Rotary district, where they provide wheelchairs to people in the community.

Pat says the Rotary Anns of Springs Park Rotary Club are supporting the Rotary Anns’ district solar lamp project, where they will be donating lights to disadvantaged communities in the Springs area.

The Anns will also embark on a rape pack project, where a bag with toiletries, towels and clean underwear will be made up for rape victims.

These will be distributed to rape crisis centres at state hospitals, as well as at police stations.

This Anns club is also serving Vita Nova and is involved in several feeding schemes to serve the underprivileged.

Springs Park Rotary Anns are making plans to raise the funds for these projects.

A huge form of income this year is the regular book sales at events like Wheels and Wings, for which the club needs donations of books in a good condition.

Pat invites everyone who is interested in joining the Anns to visit them at 6pm for 6:30pm on the the first Thursday of the month.

The Springs Rotary Park Club meets every Thursday evening at 6:30pm at Pollak Park Golf Club and everyone is welcome.
