Avenues blood drive aims high

The aim was 150 units but 117 units were collected

The blood drive held by in The Avenues Shopping Centre on Saturday was well supported.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) hosted the event and the aim was to get 150 units on the day.

At the time the Addie visited the site they were already 32 units strong.

Terrence Pillay, from Benoni SANBS, says they are surprised by the support of the public.

Several donors haven’t donated blood for some time, but found the presence of the SANBS setup quite convenient.

Strubenvale resident Japie van Zyl said he has donated 15 units, stopped for about three years, but is eager to support the blood bank again.

At 4pm, the total units collected were 117.

In the centre court of a pizza outlet sponsored a can of coke and a piece of pizza to every person donating blood, in support of the blood drive.
