Thieves caught with pylons

It is believed the pylons were part of the Eskom tower that collapsed last Friday

While Springs residents were struggling to cook and stay warm this weekend, the police arrested four men in Bakerton on Sunday for possession of stolen goods – steel pylons.

Policemen were patrolling the streets at 7pm, when they noticed four suspicious looking men carrying steel scrap.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the men were on their way to a shop where they wanted to exchange the steel for cash.

The police arrested the men and went to Petersfield where they found Eskom employees working.

“They showed the steel to these workers, who recognised it as part of Eskom tower’s pylons,” he adds.

Ramphora says the pylons had been cut into smaller pieces to makethem easier for the robbers to carry.

He claims there is a strong possibility the pylons originate from the Eskom tower that collapsed on Friday, causing areas in Springs to be without electrcity.

The four men were taken to the Springs police cells where they are being kept until their court appearance.

Ramphora adds it is not clear when they will appear in court, as the police are still taking statements to further their investigation.
