Power and water restored

Water and electricity restored to all areas in Springs

The power supply was restored at 1.20am, on Monday, after several areas in Springs were left without electricity since the early hours of Friday morning.

The electricity supply interruption was due to theft and vandalism of an Eskom tower’s steel elements, causing the tower to collapse.

The metro issued a statement on Friday stating that Eskom personnel were on scene and would have power restored to those affected within 48 hours.

Howerev, intense efforts to restore the power supply did not prevent Eskom engineers from missing this deadline.

Themba Radebe, metro spokesman, says this was due to additional damage that was detected on Saturday.

Mayor Mondli Gungubele visited the scene on Saturday and expressed his concerns after engineers were unable to meet the deadline to restore power by midnight on Saturday.

He sought to establish the status report of the repair process.

However, engineers were optimistic and the power supply was restored in the early hours of Monday morning.

On Monday morning, several areas were still without water caused by two faulty water pumps.

Radebe said at the time that the pumps pumping water from the reservoir to the elevated tower in order to supply water to the residential areas, were out of order.

He added engineers were working around the clock to repair the water supply but could not say when water would be restored.

In the meantime the metro had dispatched roving water tankers to the affected areas to help the community with water.

By late Monday afternoon residents had both power and water.

The municipality apologised for the inconvenience caused.
