Tell the metro if they leave mess

'You cannot make me responsible for cleaning up the areas that we already paid for'

Ekurhuleni Metro’s cleansing department should be informed about refuse collectors messing up pavements.

This was one of the answers to questions the Advertiser received on a letter from Barbara Erasmus.

She said the personnel of the cleansing department regularly left some rubbish behind on pavements, especially in front of her house, during collection days.

“You cannot make me responsible for cleaning up the areas that we already paid for,” said Erasmus.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman of Ekurhuleni requested residents who spotted litter-strewn pavements after the cleansing department was there, to inform the metro about the mess, as it was their responsibility to remove it.

Erasmus also complained about the R5,70 cleansing leavy, reported by the Advertiser on several occasions.

Gadebe said this amount, deducted from each ratepayer, was erroneously implemented as a separate charge when the tariffs were increased in July 2013, as it was supposed to be included in the overall refuse charge.
