Child abuse accused in court

The court case of a 36-year-old man accused of abusing his family has been postponed to June 4.

The Springs businessman appeared in the Springs Regional Court this morning (Wednesday) for a bail application.

He is accused of child abuse, defeating the ends of justice, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The prosecution asked for a continuance until June 4 stating that there are necessary reports (medical and other) outstanding, which might lead to additional charges being brought.

She also commented that the family need to consult with social workers and “other professionals” before the case can continue.

Appearing for the man, his lawyer stated that it is unreasonable of the state to ask for the seven day continuance but he later accepted that the records take time to be completed.

The magistrate agreed with the prosecution’s appeal for more time, commenting that the reports are necessary to determine whether the charges will be added to or changed.

She agreed to reconvene the proceedings on June 4.

The bail application did not take place, the charges were not read to him and he is remanded in custody in Springs.
