Learner registration comes to an end

There is still time until May 27

Registration for Grade One and Grade Eight pupils for the 2015 school year ends on May 27.

This process started on April 7 when the previous Gauteng Education MEC for Education Barbara Creecy launched the Public School Admissions Campaign at Johannesburg Park Station.

Creecy said the province has over 2 000 public ordinary schools that accommodate 1.9 million learners.

Early registration will enable the department to plan for the children who are coming into the schooling system and to ensure that the right amount of school infrastructure, learner and teacher support material and furniture are allocated to schools.

Early registration also helps parents because they will be able to get a school that is closer to their place of work or residence.

Parents who wish to register their children for admission in a public school in Gauteng, have to go to their nearest school to pick up application forms for learners who want to start Grade One or Grade Eight in this province in 2015.

The learners in the other grades also need to re-enrol at their schools.

These application forms should be returned to the school by May 27, accompanied with the child’s birth certificate or a certified copy, at least one parent’s identity number, a parent’s proof of residence or work address, the child’s immunisation card (for Grade One), study permits for legal immigrants, asylum documents for refugees and asylum seekers and the child’s latest school report card.

Upon registering their children, parents had to ensure that schools provide them with a waiting list number.

This waiting list number will indicate if the applicant is on waiting list A for parents within a feeder area of a school or waiting list B, parents outside of a feeder area of a school.

Creecy urged parents to complete the registration process.
