Wheelie bins come end of May

The metro's waste management services would notify residents in advance before they get the free bins

Residents of Springs can expect their new 240 litre wheelie bins by the end of May.

Lebogang Ramashala, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Metro, said the metro started handing out these bins on April 23 in Tsakane.

This process will take about five to six weeks before the metro will start handing out the bins in the Springs area.

“These bins are a legislative requirement regarding the standards for waste management in Gauteng.

“It is a more hygienic system compared to the bag system, as it creates more capacity for residents to store refuse.”

Ramashala said using the new bins would be compulsory as it would also reduce illegal dumping and affect rodent control, as it prohibits access to a food source for rodents.

She also regarded the wheelie bins as an accurate system for the billing of refuse services.

She assured residents the metro’s waste management services would notify residents in advance before they get the free bins.
