Park not safe for children

The George Sutter Park in Selection Park is in serious need of refurbishment.

It is clear that the grass has not been cut for quite some time and garbage is littered across the park.

Broken bottles and empty boxes of wine lay strewn across the ground.

Swings, once used by gleeful children, are either badly damaged or have had their seats stolen.

The roundabout, rusted and tilting out of the ground, is a sad and sorry sight.

Upon further investigation, it can be seen that a swarm of bees has made its home in one of the jungle gyms.

The jungle gym could not be accessed, even if the bees were not residing in it.

Blocked by dirt and long grass, no child dares enter.

The signage of the park reflects the dilapidated state of the park even before someone endeavours to enter the park.

Rusted and old, it is clear that the signage needs to be replaced.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received from the metro as to when the park would be cleaned up.

No comment was received on the beehive or when it would be removed, or on the rusty signage.

  1. That is not the only park! Come and have a look at Oppenheimer Circle. Over a period of three years, I have been to the Parks Dept., e-mailed, e-mailed the State Presidents Office, e-mailed the environmental dept., spoken to the local Councillor. The park is now used as a taxi rank, tramps, drinkers, drugs, dumping ground and a toilet. Nothing is been done about it to date.
