Metro saves water

Quick reaction prevented a lot of water going to waste.

Within 12 hours of reporting a water leak to the metro’s call centre, the metro sent out officials to investigate the situation.

Springs resident Frans Grobler, contacted the call centre at 8am last Tuesday and at 8pm, metro worker Derek Immelman and his team arrived at the scene.

According to Immelman, they established the cause of the water leak, but due to fact that it was already dark they decided to come back in the morning.

“They arrived early last Wednesday morning and had to dig a hole in the tarred road to get to the leaking pipe,” says Grobler.

The metro team quickly realised there was a hole in the perished pipe and fitted a clamp, lined with rubber, around the pipe where the hole was and tightened it.

The metro worker says there was a tiny hole in the pipe, and the clamp will last a lifetime, but the pipe will perish as it is very old.

Grobler still feels the problem could have been solved on the day of the complaint, but the metro call centre takes too long to log the complaints.

“Therefore the different teams only get the call late in the afternoon or even in the evening,” he adds, “but luckily there was not a lot of water wasted.”
