Dot leaves Springs

SpringsCare Community Centre's librarian Dot Harris (87), has retired and has left Springs to reside with her daughter in Johannesburg.

Dot and her husband Tony moved to Springs from Johannesburg in January 1954, 60 years ago.

When Tony died in 1984, it took Dot a while to find her feet and then she joined an active Springs Senior Citizens’ Club, now the SpringsCare Community Centre, in 1987.

After about four years as member of the club, the club library needed someone to take charge and Dot stepped up.

“I ran the well-stocked library until last year,” she says.

She made many friends at the club with people stopping in at the library to chat.

Most of these original members have moved on now in one way or another.

She adds that up until a couple of years ago, she would organise day trips to casinos for the seniors and she also organised four holiday trips to St Michaels in KwaZulu-Natal for club members.

But her daughter Avril Hayes says, after a nasty fall in early November, it seemed expedient for her mother to move in with her.

“It has not been easy to leave Springs after 60 years,” says Dot sadly.
