E-toll saving tips

With the new E-toll services being introduced to Gauteng road users from December 3, many people are looking at alternatives.

The tolls, which are set to start with or without the full co-operation of motorists, will affect thousands who make the daily trip to work.

Many of the alternative routes will be clogged up, resulting in heavy traffic as motorist avoid the tolls.

Sanral chief executive Nazir Alli announced on Sunday that motorists are expected to pay within seven days after receiving e-toll bills or they would be handed over to debt collectors

KwaThema resident Lungile Mahlaba, who travels to Pretoria everyday says she is looking at ways to save money.

“The truth is that I can’t afford all these extra expenses, it’s bad enough that I work far,” she says.

Here are a few ways to avoid the e-toll and save those much needed rands.

Lift club

A lift club can ease the burden of paying the daily tolls by distributing it equally amongst the passengers.

If four people use one car each week, that will save a motorist at least three weeks of e-toll fees.

This will also save on other expenses incurred with the wear and tear of your vehicle, and the cost of petrol.

Express train

The train can be used daily as a mode of transportation to avoid tolls as it uses a railway line.

Some train services like the business express, offer shuttle services from the station to the CBD.

Trains are quicker and are available throughout the day at different time intervals to a variety of locations.

Taxi

Taxi’s will be exempt from paying e-tolls which means that you will be able to get around without paying tolls.

Taxi’s are generally easy to access and are known to go almost everywhere.

This will not only save you money but will also allow you to make numerous trips with no worries.

Gautrain

Like the usual train, people travelling from Johannesburg to Pretoria or anywhere in between can use this service.

The gautrain busses are also available from the different stations to take commuters into the town.

The closest Gautrain station is Rhodesfield.
