Bail for Liebenberg

Retief Liebenberg, accused of shooting dead his daughter's boyfriend and the youth's father, was granted R50 000 bail in regional court 1 at the Benoni's Magistrate Court yesterday (November 15).

Dressed in a brown suit and blue shirt, Retief listened to the bail conditions set by Magistrate Ian Cox.

As part of the bail conditions, Magistrate Ian Cox said Liebenberg should report to the charge office at the Benoni Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 6am and 6pm.

He is not to apply for a new passport, as his previous one had expired, and may not apply for any other travel documents either.

He is not permitted to make direct or indirect contact with Rocco Duvenhage, the man believed to have been in the company of the deceased, Dewalt Visser Snr and his son, Dewalt “Poenie” Visser, on the night of the shooting at the Ebotse, until the trial has been finalised.

Liebenberg was well supported by his family and friends.

Liebenberg is being accused of shooting dead Dewalt Visser Snr (46) and his son Dewalt ‘Poenie’ Visser ( 19), at his home in Ebotse home on October 31.

Liebenberg had apparently barred his daughter, Chevonne Liebenberg (20), from seeing Poenie, as he believed the young man was using drugs.

It was alleged that Poenie had called his dad to the Liebenberg residence, saying that Liebenberg was holding him hostage.

His father arrived at the house and it is alleged there was an argument between the deceased and Liebenberg and they attacked him.

Visser snr was shot five times in the upper body, allegedly by Liebenberg, and Visser Jnr was also shot at the residence.

Both men died on the scene.

Eric Visser from Nigel, a business friend of Liebenberg, was also present to show his support.

“He is a very good and humble man,” said Visser of Liebenberg.

While the court was in session, Liebenberg’s fiance’s mother Alma Britz left the courtroom in tears.

“I just could not take it anymore,” she said “but am relieved that he does not have to sleep another night in the Benoni police cells as he does not belong there. He is a good man.

Mariska Britz, younger daughter of Alma, ran out in tears after Liebenberg confirmed to Cox he understood the conditions.

“I am so relieved,” she said Mariska.

Alma said Rozanne burst out into tears when she was contacted with the news of her fiancé’s bail and said ‘tell him I love him’.

Liebenberg is to return to court on December 11.
