History for Springs Theatre

It was history in the making when South Africa's first Afrikaans Christian film, Hartsbegeertes was shown at the Springs Theatre last Thursday.

The theatre was packed and Frik Weideman, one of the executive producers of the film, said they are blessed with the film’s success.

According to the theatre manager, Zweli Sibiya the theatre was build in the ’60s and named HF Verwoerd Theatre.

“At the time a cyclorama (white screen) was installed as a background for plays. But it has never been used for a movie, so this is definitely history in the making,” says Zweli.

“I wish the movie companies could be here to see how the people from East Rand support this film,” says Frik, who is also a pastor from the main sponsor of the film, Minorah Ministries.

The main purpose of the film is encourage people to open their hearts to Jesus. It also encourages viewers to keep dreaming.

According to director Willie Olwage it is a film ‘met begeerte’.

“My wish is for this film to touch someone’s heart, that is my heart’s desire,” says Willie.

Scriptwriter and executive producer Reiner Weideman, also plays the lead role along side Angelique Gerber (Clara from 7deLaan) who takes the role of his wife Ashley.

Reinier says it took him three years to write the script and he was inspired by God and his own situation at the time.

“You can have faith, but if you do not take the next step, whatever it is you are trying to do or achieve, is not going to work,” says

Reinier.

A proud Zweli says they are very excited, as film and theatre are being brought together in this theatre.

“This is a huge step forward due to arts getting smaller and more compact,” concludes Zweli.

The film can be seen at November 10 at Dalpark NG Church, at 7am for only R35 per person. Tickets are available at the door.
