Hyacinth update

Water hyacinth along the Alexander dam has been tended to by the metro to prevent the weed spreading further along the dam's banks and waters.

The hyacinth growing on Alexander Dam at Murray Park was tended to by the metro recently to stop a possible infestation.

The metro has started to spray herbicide on the hyacinth near the outlet as there is a threat that the hyacinth can be carried to other dams downstream.

According to metro spokesman Sam Modiba, they are only targeting the green plants as it is now winter only the green plants will absorb the herbicide sufficiently.

“During their inspection around the dam, the weed buster team noted that some farmers are using the dam water to irrigate their farms.

“We wish to warn them that we will be applying the herbicide and the dam water may not be used for irrigation until further notice. Council will not be held liable for any loss or damage to property,” warns Modiba.

He also wants to warn those people entering Murray Park via back roads to fish at the dam, that they are doing so illegally as the park is officially closed.

“Those people must know that they are trespassing and they are doing so that at their own risk,” he says.
