'Olympia Park this used to be a beautiful park'

Dear Miss Piggy
I do so enjoy your trots around our town, picking out all the beautiful spots in it!

Last week you happened to be in Olympia Park and mentioned the rows of palm trees planted for ‘no apparent reason”.

Well, as far back as I can remember, there was a reason, but this was a long, long time ago, in the late 1950s and no trace of it exists today, apart from those trees.

Once a upon a time this used to be a beautiful park, with columns lining the main road overhung with beautiful flowers, right up to the big guns on display outside the swimming pool.

These columns were made of a white sparkly stone, which was also used to make square gold-fish ponds just behind the columns, with little bridges every now and again which one could walk on to cross over the ponds.

There were also benches under the trees on which to sit and enjoy the beauty of the park or have picnics on, which we did often.

There were also lots of Peacocks roaming around the park and when the male peacock displayed his feathers, it was a beautiful sight to behold.

But then something bad happened. I don’t know why or by whom, but all the beautiful columns and ponds and benches were taken away and all that’s left today are the rows and rows of trees with their story locked inside them.

This is what I remember about Olympia Park as a child. Olympia Park is still beautiful, but unfortunately too dangerous nowadays to visit.

From your loyal reader,

Marilyn Spendlove.
