My view on photography

It is not a job, it is a passion

Photography is not a job, it is passion.

To be able to capture a moment makes me tick and will keep me going for many years.

Photography is more than clicking a photo on your camera, it is capturing tomorrow’s history.

I have been a journalist for over 30 years because of the opportunity to take photographs on a daily basis.

To be able to take photographs for a newspaper, you have to think quick, as well as technical.

It is about what I experienced all these years what I will share in the weekly Friday blog.

You have to learn the ability to “read” the light because after all, light is what photography is about.

I always say it is a “big sin” to have a camera and use it on automatic.

With the digital era bringing us cameras with many functions, most cameras nowadays have a manual option.

With his you manipulate the photographs’ light.

I can recommend this setting on your camera and if you have never used the manual setting, learn how and practice as much as possible to hone your skill with light.

I believe you have to take thousands of photos before you have grasped the art of taking a photo. And I am not there yet.

Another important skill the photographer has to develop, is to be able to “compose” or “construct” a photograph.

This is necessary in all types of photography and eventually forms the style the photographer develops for his work.

The camera you use and its ability for pixel size is not making the photographer, but the composition and what you did with the available light of your end product.

A good photographer has the ability to use the simplest camera for maximum results on many angles and being at the right place at the right time, like you can see at Springs Art Gallery’s current exhibition of upcoming photographers from Duduza.

To develop your own style, get something that facinates you and start capturing that.

I mainly photograph people in their different environments, capturing their highlights and lowest moments.

I also love trees and how it decorates a landscape, like the photo you see at the end of this story.
