Treason case still ongoing

The treason case of the four men arrested and charged with treason in December, including Springsite Johan Prinsloo (49) is still ongoing with one of the men failing to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court last Tuesday.

While there has been no recent development in the cases of Prinsloo, Hein Boonzaaier (50) and Mark Trollip (49), Martin Keevey (47) should have appeared before the court regarding a court ordered psychiatric evaluation.

However, he failed to appear and, in his absence, the case was postponed until July 19.

The four were arrested and charged with treason on December 16 when it was suspected that they were planning to detonate a bomb, aimed at killing members of the ANC, at the party’s national conference in Mangaung.

Boonzaaier was released on R80 000 bail in January while magistrate Mziwonke Hinxa refused bail to Keevy, Trollip and Prinsloo.

Keevy was sent for a 30-day evaluation at the Free State Psychiatric Complex in May, on the recommendation of magistrate Andries Schoeman. The findings of this evaluation should have been presented last week but will now be scrutinised by the magistrate on July 19 during Keevey’s next scheduled appearance.

Boonzaaier, Prinsloo and Trollip’s cases were postponed at their May court appearance until August 23 for further investigation.
