Illegal miners may be the cause of sewage leaks

A sewage leak in Cloverfield Road, between Dersley and Eastvale has caused residents much distress after overflowing for weeks.

Residents complained that the overflow of raw sewage is as unbearable to see as it is to smell, saying that it looks like a rotten dam.

It is believed that the municipality has had its hands full trying to fix all the sewage leaks materialising in various communities.

Councillor Ramesh Sheodin, ward 72, said that he thinks the municipality faces so many sewage problems that they simply don’t have the capacity to fix them all immediately.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t just stop at a sewage leak that needs fixing.

Sheodin said that the blocked drains are probably caused by illegal gold miners. Needing to get a stronger force for their water supply, these illegal miners block the drains, as well as break the pipes, to be able to clean their gold.

Police have arrived on a few occasions to chase the wrongdoers away, but the problem persists as they continue to cause destruction.

Sheodin said, “I know of at least four places in my ward where there are overflowing sewers, namely Bakerton, Payneville, Rowhill and Dersley. This is only one ward.” He also said that the department is battling to deal with all these blockages, but that it is doing its very best to deal with the many daily complaints.

The Bakerton and Payneville sewage leaks were fixed on Wednesday and the one in Cloverfield Road, on Thursday.
