Youth day celebrations

Young and old celebrated youth day

Youth day celebrations kicked off with a 5km fun walk at Sharon Park Shopping Centre on Monday.

With more than 150 entrants, who had to donate tinned food and pay R10 entrance fee, the fun started.

Upon their return each of the runners and walkers received a medal for the effort and support.

The organisers of the event, Dunnottar CPF and Sharon Park Pick n Pay management decided to do something in accordance to Youth Day.

Ray Williams, manager of the shop says before they realised the community was involved and the turnout was better than what they expected.

“We have an amazing community,” he added.

Quite a few men tried their best in a cake decorating competition in which they were required to decorate single layer cakes which were later auctioned off to the public.

The support was overwhelming and the overall winner was Wayne Russell, second place went to Jean Zeelie and third place to warrant officer Tommy Tomlinson.

Cakes were judged on the decorating skill before they were auctioned off, with the second place cake raising more money than Wayne’s first place cake.

Wayne’s neatly decorated cake was auctioned off for R100 while Jean’s cake with a Springbok rugby theme was auctioned for R110.

Tommy’s “Don’t do Crime” cake was sold for R77.

The final decision was made to auction off all the other entrants’ cakes as well.

After a well supported event with lots of interesting eats and fun for the children, all proceeds are going to the Dunnottar CPF, who support the community in need.

“Although today’s event was planned in commemoration of June 16, we have decided to make this a three-monthly event,” concludes Ray.
