Blackfin at Midmar

Blackfin swimming club members will again be swimming the annual Midmar Mile swim.

While perhaps not the most gruelling open-water swim in South Africa, it is by far the most popular and race organisers believe it to be the largest open –water swim in the world.

Blackfin Swimming Club have 48 swimmers taking part, many of whom have done the swim 10 or more times.

Most members of the team have been training regularly for the last few months in order to complete a successful swim.

The youngest swimmer from the club is Byron Smit (8) who will compete in his first Midmar.

While most swimmers are happy to make it across the 1.6km distance in a faster time than the previous year, Derryn Nel (17) will be the club’s best prospect of a top 10 position finish.

Derryn will be competing in the South African Open Water Swimming Championships in Midmar Dam the day after the Midmar Mile.

The success of the Midmar Mile lies in its ability to attract people of all shapes and sizes, both young and old, the fit and the unfit alike.

The Midmar is one of few sporting events where families can compete together and many families will be taking part in the popular family relay on Saturday February before taking it a little more seriously on Sunday.
