Armed robbers target business

Three armed robbers robbed a business near Grootvlei Mine, making off with R145 920 in stolen goods and locking the employees in the guard house.

Three men robbed a business on Van Niekerk Road near Grootvlei Mine at about 01:00 on September 1.

The complainant, who was on duty with a colleague, reported that the men entered the guard house. Two of them brandished firearms.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the armed men allegedly restrained both employees using cable ties and shoe laces, then moved them to a different part of the premises.

“One of the robbers took the complainant away while the other two remained with the colleague,” said Tshabalala.

“The robber demanded gold and money from the complainant, who told him there was neither. He then asked about the amount of diesel in the JoJo tank, to which the complainant said it was nearly full.”

Tshabalala said one robber then brought the colleague to join them and forced both to lie flat on the ground. The two robbers then left, leaving one behind to stand guard.

“The complainant heard an idling truck and was told to stand up. The remaining robber cut their shoelaces before taking them back to the guard house.”

The robbers locked the employees inside before fleeing the scene with 4 600l of diesel, 210l of oil, two shaft bearings, a gas stove, two cellphones and R400 in cash.

Tshabalala said the complainant and his colleague managed to kick open the door and sought help from two passersby, who helped free them.

The value of the stolen goods is R145 920. There were no shots fired, and no injuries were reported. The Springs SAPS is investigating the incident as a case of business robbery.
