Duck pond in George Sutter Park is thriving

The animals at this pond are Kathy and Henry's pride and joy.

Following the article in last week’s Springs Advertiser, ‘Duck pond is running dry’ regarding concerns about the duck pond in Selcourt, caretakers of the pond in George Sutter Park reached out to share advice.

For more than a decade, Kathy and Henry Preston have been maintaining the duck pond along Nigel Road.

Back when the pond started deteriorating, the couple took matters into their own hands. For years they maintained the pond on their own, but for the last four years AfriForum jumped in to help.

AfriForum still ensures the grass is cut and the pond is cleaned once a week.

According to Morné Greyling, vice-chairperson of AfriForum, the type of maintenance required is not a one-man job.

Kathy and Henry have been doing a sterling job feeding the animals daily and helping to maintain the property. These animals are their pride and joy.

“I don’t know how Selcourt got so bad, it used to be such a nice dam. Ekurhuleni should try and step in there, it is not a one-man job,” Kathy said.

Morné said the pond in Selcourt could only be saved with the help of a borehole. He advises the municipality to intervene along with the residents of this area.
