Springs Central Air Scouts calls on new members

The Springs Central Air Scouts has been running for over 40 years.

The Springs Central Air Scouts continue to welcome new members. Troop scouter Melissa Campbell highlights the benefits of joining the Scouts.

“We teach life skills and to think out of the box too. We teach the youth survival, mapping, pioneering and first aid skills they don’t get taught at school. If ever they get into a situation or come across a scene, they can apply what they learnt about such a situation.

“We also do a lot of outdoor activities, like camping and hiking. Meerkats, Cubs and Scouts programmes are all similar they are just scaled down to the different age groups.”

The group welcomes both boys and girls from as early as five years old.

“The Meerkats ages are five to seven years old, Cubs are seven to 11 years and Scouts are 11 to 18 years old.”

There is a monthly fee of R180 and a once-off fee for the uniforms when they get invested. Melissa says there are a lot of advantages that come with being a Scout.

“You learn a lot of skills, make new friends, be in the outdoors, see places and most importantly you always have fun.

“The youth learn a lot and the leaders always go the extra mile to give them great memories during their scouting journey.

“They also earn badges such as for fishing, being an artist or for fitness. There are advanced levels for each group.”

The Meerkats and Cubs meet every Friday from 16:15 to 17:45 and Scouts every Wednesday from 17:45 to 20:00.
The group, which has been growing strong for over 40 years, is the last scouting group in Springs.

“We are so grateful that we can continue doing what we do, as not many people know what scouting is or that there is still a group left in Springs.”
