Pageant semi-finalist leads tree planting drive

Being an advocate for environmental awareness, conservation and social responsibility, the Miss Earth 2024 semi-finalist recently visited Payneville Primary School to plant a tree.

Miss Earth 2024 semi-finalist Joy Magagula, known for her advocacy in environmental awareness, conservation, and social responsibility, recently embarked on a school visitation campaign to promote tree planting.

The initiative started at Payneville Primary School, where Magagula engaged with the learners, emphasising the significance of planting trees and their roles in environmental stewardship.

“Given that we recently celebrated World Environment Day, I felt it was crucial to visit schools across Ekurhuleni to educate learners about our environment and the importance of tree planting,” said Joy.

She underscored the pivotal role of children as advocates for environmental sustainability, noting, “Children are our voice, and instilling environmental values from a young age is paramount.”

Magagula highlighted the importance of intersectional environmentalism (identifies how injustices happening to marginalised communities and the earth are interconnected), stressing that sustainability initiatives must cater to diverse communities.

Magagula has overseen the planting of nearly 70 trees in schools across Ekurhuleni as part of her ongoing efforts to date.

During one of these planting sessions, she and the learners planted an apple tree named Mbali, which means ‘flower’ in Zulu.

Her commitment to environmental education and hands-on initiatives exemplify her dedication to fostering a sustainable future through grassroots engagement and community involvement.
