Springs police send stern warning about perjury cases

The Springs police station sends a stern warning to community members to refrain from opening false cases.

The Springs SAPS has noticed with concern that the opening of false cases (perjury) is becoming the norm.

Springs spokesperson SergeantThemba Tshabalala said they condemn the act by community members who willfully tell untruths or make a misrepresentation under oath.

This comes after Tshabalala said that in January, multiple false house robbery cases were opened whereby the complainant would allege that household contents were stolen.

“Investigation later revealed that the complainant’s household contents were still in her possession and she wanted to claim from her insurance,” said Tshabalala.

In another case, a complainant reported a hijacking case and indicated that he was hijacked in Springs by armed men who dropped him off in Kingsway, Benoni.

The investigation later revealed the complainant handed over his vehicle to the men whom he allegedly knew and who were still in possession of the vehicle for him to claim from his insurance.

Tshabalala added that cases that are falsely reported to the police inflate the overall crime statistics, where aggravated robbery is a serious concern.

“Reporting false cases wastes the SAPS’ time and resources, which could have been effectively used to investigate other serious cases,” he said.

Tshabalala added that perjury is an offence that is punishable by law.
