Dad inspires Katlego to run

The 11-year-old aspires to be a professional athlete, just like his father.

Eleven-year-old Katlego Namo dreams of becoming a professional athlete when he grows up. The Strubenvale Primary School learner started taking his running career seriously last June.

“I competed in a cross country meet at [Laerskool] Jan Van Riebeeck.”

The passionate runner says he uses various mediums in his running journey to help him.

“I have fitness apps that help me to exercise. I also run two laps to the tuck shop and back three times weekly.”

Katlego, inspired by his father, Buti, who runs for the Kwa-Thema Striders, says keeping up with his dad when they train is not an issue for him.

“My dad is very proud that I want to follow in his footsteps.”

Proud mom Palisa said she saw her child’s growing love for running and decided to invest.

“He started showing an interest in running, and I decided to register us for the parkrun.

“As a mother, I am happy he is interested in something that will derail him from drugs and other forms of substance abuse.”

Katlego says he can keep a proper balance with running because school always comes first for him.

“I study every day, and when I have time afterwards, I practice, and when there is no time, I wait for another day.”

Katlego plays various sports, including soccer, shotput, tennis and long jump.
