Radiology: Where technology meets diagnoses and treatment

Observed on November 8 every year, the day commemorates the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.

In celebration of World Radiography Day, the Netcare N17 Hospital set out to create awareness about the crucial role of radiographers in the healthcare system.

Observed on November 8 every year, the day marks the discovery of X-radiation by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.

“Radiography is medical imaging using radiation. We are known as the eyes of medicine because we see what the naked eye cannot see,” explained Bernita Swartz, chief radiographer at the hospital.

The field has four branches: diagnostic radiography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic ultrasounds.

Swartz believes more young people should explore the field as a career.

“Anyone who is interested in technology and patient care might enjoy being in this field.

“The hospital allows young people to shadow us as they seek to understand more about radiology,” she added.

The department has a steady stream of student radiographers and sonographers throughout the year.

They work in partnership with one university.

Swartz said although many patients are compliant, they have some challenges with unjustified referrals.

“Exposure to radiation can be dangerous to the human body. We want to ensure that everyone who gets an x-ray done needs it and has been referred by a doctor,” she explained.

Swartz said there are many professionals who are leaving the country with their skills.

“Radiography has always been a scarce skill,” she added.

She hopes with the right information, they will persuade more young people to study and enter the field.

The subjects required from secondary school learners for radiography include life sciences, physical sciences and mathematics.
