Five armed robbers bomb a cash safe at petrol station

The armed robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving the shop extensively damaged.

Five armed men robbed the Engen Rowhill convenience store on South Main Reef and Paul Kruger Highway in the early hours of Friday morning.

The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

According to Springs SAPS communication officer Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, they stormed the premises and demanded the belongings of the shop employees, as well as the keys to the safe.

“One of the employees told them that he did not have the keys,” said Tshabalala.

“They forced the employees to lie down at the furthest corner of the shop, and shortly after, they heard three explosions.”

Tshabalala added the employees left the premises upon discovering that the robbers had fled.

“A security guard, who arrived at the petrol station about 10 minutes later to inflate his tyres, called the SAPS for backup,” said Tshabalala.
