DK du Plessis teacher runs Sani Stagger marathon

Charmaine Botha ran the Sani Stagger marathon this past weekend and blew other runners out of the water.

Springs resident Charmaine Botha (39) took part in the gruelling Sani Stagger 42km race on November 12.

It took place in the Drakensberg, starting at Sani Resort Hotel. It is a race with an elevation of 2865m, with the route also bordering Lesotho,

Botha has been a Springs resident for 12 years and is a member of the Springs Striders. She is also a teacher at Dr WK du Plessis School.

She bagged the silver medal with a second overall place in the open ladies’ division.

Botha has been running marathons for years and completed the Two Oceans, Cape Town and Comrades marathons this year alone.

According to Botha, the hardest part about the Sani is the elevation and running on dirt roads and through rivers.

To train for marathons, Botha runs five days a week and goes to the gym for the other two.

Botha lives in Petersfield with her husband Johan Botha (41) and twin daughters Amoré and Adoné (9).

The children are following in their mother’s footsteps by occasionally taking part in the parkrun. Botha also follows a strict diet of high protein and low carbohydrates.

She does intermittent fasting. She is preparing for the Magoebaskloof forest trail run, which covers 50km.
